REDS Sweep Sea-Hawks
(FREDERICTON, NB) The U SPORTS No. 9 ranked UNB REDS extended their Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball season-opening win streak to seven with a 3-0 win over the Memorial Sea-Hawks, Saturday afternoon at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
In the opening set, the REDS used a 4-0 run to open a 22-16 lead on route to a 25-20 set victory.
Isla Olesen recorded five blocks in the first set.
In the second, the REDS scored on a long 31-touch rally to pull even, 8-8, and then pulled away for a 25-16 win.
The Sea-Hawks edged out to an early 6-4 lead in the third set, but the REDS bounced back and then built a lead, winning 25-16 for the straight sets victory.
Lydia Green led the REDS with nine kills while Olesen finished with five blocks and seven kills, on an impressive .462 hitting percentage. Olesen was named Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
Jenna Adams registered 15 digs, and Talia Nixon had 28 assists.
Karen Greek had seven digs for the Sea-Hawks while Nella Woelfel made half a dozen kills and Taylar Johnston put up a match-high six blocks.
The REDS improve to 7-0 and continue to sit atop the AUS standings. The Sea-Hawks are now 2-4.
With the straight-sets win, UNB has won 17 consecutive sets. The REDS haven't lost a set since the third set of a 3-2 win over Dalhousie on October 31st.
The Sea-Hawks return to action, and New Brunswick, on Friday when they play at Moncton.
The REDS will go to Acadia next weekend for matches on Saturday, at 7:00pm, and Sunday, at 2:00pm.
