(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS scored twice in the opening period on route to a decisive 3-0 win over the St. Thomas Tommies in the third game of their best-of-five Atlantic University Sport women's hockey semi-final, Sunday night at Fredericton's Grant-Harvey Centre.
First-year REDS' forward Keira Grant put the visitors on the board early, skating into the slot and wristing a hard shot past Tommies' goalie Katie Sweeney at the 4:28 mark.
Grant's goal would prove to be the game-winner.
Lauren Carter put the REDS up 2-0 just past the mid-way point of the first period.
In the second, with the REDS on the powerplay, Hailey Jackson lifted a backhander up and over Sweeney to make it a 3-0 game.
The Tommies did hold the REDS to just a pair of shots on goal in the final period, but the damage had already been done.
Cassie McCallum stopped 24 shots in the REDS' net to earn the shutout.
Sweeney took the loss, giving up the three UNB goals on 21 shots.
The REDS now lead the series two-games-to-one.
The Tommies host game four on Monday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00pm.
