(ELMIRA, ON) The UNB REDS will play for the bronze medal at the U SPORTS Women's Hockey Championship after a 5-1 loss to the Université de Montreal Carabins in the semi-finals, Saturday evening in Elmira, Ontario.
The No. 8 seeded Carabins, who knocked off the tournament's No. 1 seeded UBC Thunderbirds on Friday, scored twice in the first period.
After a scoreless second period, Montreal added a third goal before UNB got on the board, late in the third.
Hailey Jackson's goal at 17:17 came off a goalmouth scramble.
Montreal would add two more, including an empty-net goal, to make the final 5-1.
Cassie McCallum made 25 saves on 29 shots in the UNB net.
Maude Desrochers stopped 20 of the 21 shots she faced in the Montreal net.
Audrey-Anne Veillette scored twice for the Carabins while Jade Picard contributed a goal and an assist.
The fourth-seeded REDS will face the Guelph Gryphons, the No. 3 seed, in Sunday's bronze medal game. That game is scheduled for 12:00pm Atlantic/11:00am Eastern.
Montreal will take on No. 2 Concordia in the gold medal game.
