Last Second Goal Lifts REDS
(MONCTON, NB) Cole Huckins' goal with one second left in overtime lifted the UNB REDS to a 4-3 win over l'Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus in game two of the Atlantic University Sport men's hockey final, Tuesday night at Moncton's J. Louis Lévesque Arena.
With time winding down, Huckins went backhand to forehand before beating Moncton goalie Olivier Adam as time expired.
The REDS' win, before a sold-out crowd of 1200, forces a third and deciding game in the best of three series.
The REDS struck first in this game, at the 2:43 mark of the opening period.
Cody Morgan's shot from just outside the right faceoff circle found its way past Adam and put the visitors ahead 1-0.
After holding off some intense pressure by the REDS, Moncton evened the score at 14:30 when Mika Cyr fed Jeremy D'Astous a perfect pass. D'Astous easily re-directed the puck past REDS goalie Remi Delafontaine.
Moncton held UNB to just six shots on goal in the second period, but the REDS scored on two of those shots.
At 6:23 the puck squirted out into the slot where Mike Petizian pounced on it and fired it past Adam, beating him glove side.
Morgan scored his second of the game from a sharp angle and a off a rebound from his own shot to put the REDS up 3-1 with just over six minutes remaining in the period.
Early in the third, Moncton clawed back to within a goal when Cyr tipped Jonathan Desrosiers' shot past Delafontaine.
David Doucet tied it 3-3 with 4:07 to play and send it to the extra frame.
Both goalies faced 31 shots.
Delafontaine made 28 saves to earn the win in the UNB net while Adam made 27 saves.
Game three goes Thursday night at UNB's Aitken Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00pm.
Both Moncton and UNB have already qualified for next week's U SPORTS men's hockey championship, in Halifax. The national championship runs March 19-22.
