Hargreaves And McCallum Lead REDS
(FREDERICTON, NB) Payton Hargreaves scored twice to lead the UNB REDS in a 5-0 win over the UPEI Panthers in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action, Saturday night at UNB's Aitken Centre.
The home team opened the scoring at the 8:14 mark of the first period.
On the powerplay, Avery Thurston fed Hilary Wood in the left faceoff circle and Wood wired a wrist shot past Panthers' starting goaltender Sarah Forsythe.
Less than two minutes later, Hargreaves beat Forsythe from a similar spot to make it a 2-0 game.
UNB's second goal came before the Panthers' first shot on the REDS net.
Rylee Strohm scored a powerplay goal at 15:04 to put the REDS ahead 3-0.
Erin Cabaday took over in the UPEI net to start the second period, and the pace of the game slowed somewhat.
The only goal of the period came off the stick of REDS' leading scorer Olivia Eustace and UNB took a 4-0 lead to the second intermission.
Hargreaves scored her second, on the powerplay, early in the third. She was named Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
Eustace, Wood, and Strohm all finished with a goal and an assist while Thurston, Katelyn Scott, and Keira Grant each had a pair of assists.
Cassie McCallum stopped all 23 shots she faced to earn the shutout.
Forsythe took the loss after surrendering three goals on 11 shots. Cabaday made 10 saves on 12 shots.
With the win, the REDS are now 11-5-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) while the Panthers are 9-6-1-0.
UNB is back in action on Friday when they host Moncton. Game time is 7:00pm.
The Panthers host Mount Allison at the same time.
