Warren Goes Pro
(FREDERICTON, NB) Talli Warren only played two seasons at UNB, but the home-grown defender has left a strong legacy in the REDS’ women’s hockey program, one that will continue to evolve in professional hockey.
Warren, from Mundleville, New Brunswick, has signed a contract with HC Lugano Ladies, of the Swiss Women’s League.
“It’s pretty surreal to sign a professional hockey contract,” said Warren. “This is what I’ve dreamed of since I started playing hockey. I’m grateful to be able to have this opportunity and to continue playing hockey at the highest level.”
After two seasons at the University of New Hampshire, Warren joined the REDS for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, helping UNB to a pair of Atlantic University Sport championships.
She says she had more than one Swiss League team express interest in her services, and chose Lugano based on what she called the strength of their program.
“The team is looking good this year,” she said. “The SWHL seems to be a very competitive league, and there’s not a big drop from tops in the standings to the bottom. I’m looking forward to seeing how our team will compete.”
Warren follows former REDS teammates Tamina Kehler and Ashley Stratton into Europe’s pro ranks.
Stratton and Kehler signed earlier with Berlin, of the German women’s league.
“We’re thrilled that Talli will continue her hockey journey, playing in Switzerland,” said REDS’ head coach Sarah Hilworth. “The Swiss league for women is very competitive and we know Talli will bring her compete level and strong play to Lugano.”
“Lugano is getting a special player,” added Hilworth. “I’m excited to be a fan, and we are so proud of her.”
Lugano finished third in the seven-team Swiss League standings last season, advancing to the league semi-finals.
