Solid 3rd Pushes REDS Past Tommies
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS wrapped up exhibition play Sunday afternoon, defeating the St. Thomas Tommies 3-1.
Sydney Oitomen (Mississauga, ON), Bailey McMaster (Regina, SK), and Katelyn Scott (Almonte, ON) all scored for the REDS, who won their second game in as many days.
Oitomen opened the scoring just under a minute into in the second period, putting home a rebound off a shot from the point, giving UNB the 1-0 lead.
The REDS continued to shut down the Tommies, not allowing them on the scoreboard through two periods.
In the third period, the REDS first-year players stole the show.
At 8:52, McMaster seized an opportunity, finding an open net after a powerful slapshot by Lauren Carter (Milton, ON), extending UNB's lead to 2-0.
Scott then made her mark just over a minute later, showcasing her skills by charging through two STU defenders and beating Tommies' goalie Chloe Marshall (Calgary, AB) to make it 3-0.
The Tommies were finally able to break through at 11:12 of the third period when Ella Chambers (Ottawa, ON) beat REDS goalie Cassie McCallum (Rothesay, NB) to end UNB's shutout bid.
McCallum made 14 saves in UNB's victory.
The REDS will face the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues on October 6th at 7:00pm, in Moncton, marking the beginning of their Atlantic University Sport regular season campaign.
The Tommies will host UPEI in their home opener, October 6th at 7:00pm.
