REDS Make First Appearance In Nat'l Rankings
(FREDERICTON, NB) It’s not game day, but the UNB REDS women’s hockey team is celebrating.
The REDS are ranked ninth in the first U SPORTS women’s hockey Top 10 of the 2021-2022 season.
It’s the first time the REDS have cracked the national Top 10 since the return of women’s hockey to UNB, in 2018.
“We’re thrilled about our program’s first Top 10 ranking,” said REDS head coach Sarah Hilworth. “I believe it speaks to all the hard work and dedication our program has shown since the return of the REDS to Atlantic University Sport and U SPORTS competition. We’ve had tremendous support from the university and we want to continue to push to remain one of the top programs in Canada.”
The REDS sit atop the AUS standings with a 6-1-0-1 record, tied with Saint Mary’s at 13 points.
The Huskies are 4th in the national Top 10, while the St FX X-Women, third in the AUS standings, are ranked 1st.
“It’s exciting to be ranked alongside programs we’ve been fighting for positioning with over the last few years, and I believe it shows how competitive our conference is becoming,” said Hilworth. “I believe it’s a great showing for the AUS, but we can’t take it for granted. We need to continue to push for continued excellence.”
The REDS return to action Friday when they host Moncton. Game time is 7:00pm.
UNB welcomes the UPEI Panthers to the Aitken Centre on Saturday evening. Game time is 7:00pm.
