Reiner Commits To REDS
(FREDERICTON, NB) The defending Atlantic University Sport women’s hockey champions, the UNB REDS, have received a verbal commitment from forward April Reiner, who will join the team’s recruiting class of 2023.
The 16-year-old, from Kitchener, Ontario, is currently attending Preston High School, in Cambridge, and is a member of the K-W Rangers, of Ontario’s Provincial Women’s Hockey League. In 30 games during the 2021-2022 season, Reiner finished second in team scoring with seven goals and 12 assists.
“We’re excited to welcome April to our program in our 2023 recruiting class,” said REDS head coach Sarah Hilworth. “We see her as someone that can make a difference from day one.”
Before joining the Rangers, Reiner was a member of the Cambridge Roadrunners U18 AA and U15 AA teams.
During the 2020-21 season, Reiner served as one of the Roadrunners’ assistant captains and helped Cambridge to titles at the North York Storm Fest Tournament and the Brantford Regional Spring Showdown.
In 2019, the Cambridge U15 team won an Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championship.
“The culture that Coach Hilworth has created, both on and off the ice, is truly amazing,” said Reiner. “She’s built a winning and welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. The coaches and players have a desire to make an impact and be a threat in the league. They have an incredible story that I’m excited to be part of.”
“April plays an aggressive game,” said Hilworth. “She’s tenacious on the puck and has excellent speed on attack. We know, with April in our line-up, that we’ll continue to get faster as a team.”
“I’m eager to play a part in the continuing return of the REDS’ women’s hockey program and to continue to grow the game for female players across the country,” said Reiner. “I want to win a national championship with the REDS.”
Reiner will study Kinesiology while attending UNB.
