REDS Fall In Five Setter
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS lost a hard-fought 3-2 decision to the Sherbrooke Vert et Or in RSEQ men's volleyball action, Saturday afternoon at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
The visitors won 25-19, 24-26, 18-25, 25-19, and 15-11.
In the first set, the REDS fell behind 6-1 and struggled to keep pace as Sherbrooke won the opener 25-19.
In an extended second set, the REDS were more aggressive but neither side was able to establish a significant advantage. UNB scored five of the final six points to win the set 26-24 and tie the match at a set apiece.
UNB carried that momentum into the third set, building an early 6-2 lead. The REDS maintained pressure throughout and won 25-18.
The Vert et Or rallied to win the fourth set 25-19, and in the decisive fifth set held the edge throughout, winning 15-11.
Finn McMorran, named the REDS' Tim Horton's Player of the Game, put up 46 assists, 24 digs, and three blocks.
First-year RED Moritz Möhring struck 16 kills while fellow first-year RED Alex Bourque registered 21 digs.
Lucas Maffia had 10 kills and four blocks.
Gregoire Mercier-Noel hit 18 kills and had 18 digs and five blocks for Sherbrooke while Antone Ravet added 21 digs. Olivier Ducharme pitched 50 assists.
The loss drops UNB's record to 6-6, still good for third place in the RSEQ standings. Sherbrooke improves to 5-7. They remain fourth.
Up next for the REDS, another home court series, this one against second place Laval. That begins Friday, January 30th at 6:00pm.
Sherbrooke returns to action the same night when they host Montreal.
