(FREDERICTON, NB) David Doucet's goal with just 49 seconds to play gave l'Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus a 4-3 win over the UNB REDS in the first game of their best-of-three Atlantic University Sport men's hockey championship series, presented by Bell, in Fredericton on Sunday afternoon.
Doucet tipped Thomas Pelletier's point shot past REDS goalie Remi Delafontaine, ending what had been a flurry of REDS activity, and giving Moncton a 1-0 lead in the series.
The visitors wasted no time, scoring the opening goal just 42 seconds in, on the game's first shot on goal.
AUS MVP Mika Cyr's shot from just outside the left faceoff circle got past Delafontaine to give Moncton the early 1-0 edge.
Just before the eight-minute mark of the first a collision behind the Moncton net broke a pane of glass, causing a 15-minute delay for repairs.
Cyr scored again with 1:05 to play in the first, capitalizing on a rare turnover by the REDS in their own zone, and Moncton took a 2-0 lead to the first intermission.
Early in the second period, with the REDS on the powerplay, Jax Dubois pounced on a rebound and beat Moncton goalie Nathan Darveau to make it a 2-1 game.
Just over two minutes later, Moncton restored their two-goal lead on a goal by Yannic Bastarache.
In the third, Luke Torrance and Cody Morgan scored goals 1:19 apart to tie the game 3-3.
With 4:27 to play, Darveau came out of the Moncton net after experiencing some discomfort on a play. Olivier Adam came in in relief.
The REDS continue to press, but it was les Aigles Bleus and Doucet who'd get the winning goal.
Delafontaine surrendered four goals on 19 shots.
Darveau made 26 saves on 29 shots before leaving the game. Adam stopped all six of the UNB shots he faced.
Cyr was named the Boston Pizza Player of the Game.
Game two of the series will be played in Moncton, on Tuesday. Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
Both UNB and Moncton will compete, along with hosts Saint Mary's, in the upcoming University Cup U SPORTS men's hockey championship tournament, in Halifax, March 19-22.
