REDS Shutout Panthers
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS snapped an uncharacteristic winless streak with a 3-0 win over the UPEI Panthers Saturday night in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action at UNB's Aitken Centre.
After a scoreless opening period, the REDS upped their offensive aggressiveness in the second, ringing a shot off the crossbar about 90 seconds in.
A scramble in front of the Panthers' net at the 7:25 mark resulted in a UPEI penalty, and the REDS power-play capitalized immediately.
Off a draw in the UPEI zone Justin Nolet's point shot was tipped by Stuart Rolofs at 7:30, giving the home team a 1-0 lead.
The REDS extended that lead later in the frame when Peter Reynolds dropped a pass for Cody Morgan as the pair broke down the right wing. Morgan lifted a seeing-eyed backhand over the left shoulder of Panthers' goalie Jakob Robillard at 15:15 to make it 2-0 UNB.
The REDS held UPEI to just three shots during the second period.
Rolofs scored his second of the game, on the power-play, less than a minute into the third period and the REDS held that 3-0 margin through the 60-minute mark. He was named the Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
Remi Delafontaine stopped all 18 shots he faced in the UNB net while Robillard made 31 saves on 34 REDS shots.
With the win the REDS are now 3-2-1-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) and sit fourth in the AUS standings. The Panthers are 2-4-0-0 and in sixth place.
UNB returns to action on Friday night when they host the AUS-leading Saint Mary's Huskies. Game time is 7:00pm
UPEI will host Acadia at the same time.
