Green Joins REDS
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS women’s volleyball team is adding 6’1” middle hitter Mikki Green to their recruiting class of 2022.
The 17-year-old, from West Kelowna, BC, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2022-2023 Atlantic University Sport season.
“Mikki is a solid blocker who hits a heavy ball and is motivated to improve her game in any way she can,” said REDS head coach Richard Schick.
Finishing her Grade 12 year at Kelowna Secondary School, Green is a veteran member of the Owls’ senior girls’ “A” team.
In 2021, Green helped the Owls to a pair of tournament titles, including the prestigious Best of the West Tournament, where she earned a spot on the tournament All Star Team.
Green and the Owls finished 3rd in British Columbia’s AAAA provincial championship.
Predominantly a middle, Green can play right side too.
She’s been a member of Kelowna’s Energy Volleyball Club, at the U16 and U17 levels, and was captain of both sides as well as a team all-star with the U16 side.
She’s spending her U18 season as a member of the Junior Heat club program.
In 2021, Green was a member of British Columbia’s U18 team.
“As an athlete, I’d say I’m an active blocker and hitter,” said Green. “I love playing defence and am aggressive with my serves. I love being part of a team.”
“I am so grateful to be able to keep playing the sport I love,” she said. “I realize what a gift it is to be invited to play on such an amazing team, and I will always be willing to learn and improve my skills and support others to do the same. I’m focused and dedicated, and am humbled and excited by this amazing opportunity. I can't wait to be on the court and be part of the REDS.”
“Mikki’s another student-athlete who knows exactly what she wants, both in the classroom and on the volleyball court,” said Coach Schick. “She’s a versatile athlete who has played both in the middle and on the outside, and comes to us from excellent high school and club programs.”
Green has established improving her game as a short-term goal. Longer-term, she wants to be a main contributor.
“I want to contribute on the court and off,” she said. “I want to help the REDS win the AUS and get to the 2023 national championship tournament.”
Green will study nursing while attending UNB.
