REDS Add M/OH Vaags For 2022-23
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS women’s volleyball team is adding 6’1” middle and outside hitter Meghan Vaags, of Abbotsford, BC, to their recruiting class of 2022.
“Meghan’s an athlete who is someone I'd love to be on the court with,” said REDS head coach Richard Schick. “Her competitive spirit and drive to be great is something we're going to love working with.”
Vaags is currently finishing her Grade 12 year at Abbotsford Christian Secondary School, where she helped the Knights to Eastern Valley and BCSSAA championship in 2021.
A member of the Valley Elite Volleyball Club since 2019, Vaags was named an all-star at the 2021 provincial championship tournament, the 2021 Eastern Valley conference championship tournament, as well as the 2019 and 2021 Best of the West tournaments.
Vaags was also named to a list of the top 15 Grade 12 women’s volleyball players in British Columbia, along with fellow REDS recruit Heather Benko.
“Seeing the talented recruiting class UNB has assembled sparked my interest,” said Vaags. “Being able to work with Coach Schick really drew me into the high level of coaching and play.”
“I’m a positive and energetic player,” she said. “As a multi-positional athlete, I would say I’m adaptable. I strive to be coachable and incorporate feedback into my play.”
Schick says Vaags’ versatility will be an asset to the team.
“Playing both in the middle and as an outside hitter is something that gives us options, both on offence and defence,” he said. “Meghan is a special individual who has always looked to be involved in her community, coaching and working with other youth, a perfect fit for Fredericton and the UNB family.”
Vaags says her short-term goal is to work on the physical side of her game and improve her strength. Longer term, she wants to become a main contributor.
“I want to help bring the REDS to the highest competitive level possible.”
Vaags will study Psychology while attending UNB.
