REDS Add Wezeman To Class Of '22
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS women’s volleyball team is adding 5’7” outside hitter and defensive specialist Emily Wezeman, of Port Moody, British Columbia, to their recruiting class of 2022.
The 18-year-old has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2022-2023 Atlantic University Sport season.
“Emily is someone who instantly raises the level of training and competition in our gym,” said REDS head coach Richard Schick. “She has excellent skills and is efficient in every facet of the game.”
Wezeman, finishing her Grade 12 year at Riverside Secondary School, in Port Coquitlam, led the Rapids’ senior girls’ team to conference and provincial high school championships in 2021.
With Riverside’s Grade 9 and junior girls’ teams, she helped the Rapids earn conference and provincial titles in 2018 and 2019. In both seasons, Wezeman was a first team all-star.
Wezeman and her Rapids teammates won numerous tournaments in 2021, including the Trinity Western University Baden Fesitval, where she was named tournament MVP, and the Red Serge Classic, where she was named a tournament all-star.
“I like the values Coach Schick has brought to the team,” said Wezeman. “Especially the drive to make UNB Volleyball a nationally recognized program. My short-term goal at UNB is to win an AUS championship, sending us to the national championship tournament.”
A veteran member of the prestigious Ducks Volleyball Club, where she plays with fellow REDS recruit Lizzie Roemer, Wezeman was also a member of the regional team that won gold at the 2019 Volleyball BC Cup. She also competed at the 2018 BC Summer Games.
“As a hitter, I’ve learned a wide range of shots on offence, which I think is one of my greatest assets, along with my athleticism and work ethic,” she said. “As a captain on past school and club teams, leadership skills, both on and off the court, is another strength I will bring to UNB.”
“Emily is a winner and has been a leader on every team she’s been involved with,” said Coach Schick. “She’s seen a great deal of team and individual success over her young career.”
Wezeman will pursue a Bachelor of Science in Biology while attending UNB.
