Morrow & Smikle Lead REDS
(SAINT JOHN, NB) Haley Angus and Ashley Morrow both recorded a pair of podium finishes to lead the UNB REDS women's track and field team in the weekend's UNB Invitational, at the Irving Oil Field House, in Saint John.
Morrow won the women's weight throw and finished third in the women's shot put while Angus leapt to second in the triple jump and third in the long jump.
Morrow's winning toss in the weight throw, 17.20 metres, also qualified her for the U SPORTS Track & Field Championships, March 5-7 at the University of Manitoba.
First-year RED Shaniece Smikle won the women's 60-metres in a time of 7.64 seconds while UNB teams won the 4-by-200 and 4-by-800 metre relays.
Anne Vogt was second in the 60-metre hurdles, just 4/100ths of a second back of winner Claire LeBlanc of Dal.
There was another dramatic finish in the women's 600-metres, where UNB's Anna Somers was second, finishing a mere 6/10ths of a second back of Dal's Ruby Harris.
Hannah Barnhard won the women's high jump for UNB, and Naomi Corwin won the women's pole vault.
The REDS are now preparing for the Atlantic University Sport Championships which take place February 20thand 21st, in Moncton.
