(CHARLOTTETOWN, PE) The UNB REDS scored in the beginning, the middle, and the end of a 3-0 Atlantic University Sport women's soccer win at UPEI on Sunday.
"It was a great win after a long travel day," said REDS' head coach Jon Crossland. "The quick goals at the start of each half were helpful and when we went up 2-0, we settled down and controlled the remainder of the day."
Heidi Lauwerijssen, a native Prince Edward Islander, scored UNB's eventual winner in just the third minute. She evaded two Panthers defenders before sliding a left-footed shot past UPEI keeper Claudia Mazzei.
Evana Eyubeh scored early in the second half and Mackenzie Walsh scored after the 90-minute mark, beating Mazzei to a loose ball at the top of the box before firing the ball into a wide-open net.
Mazzei took the loss while Ava Henry stopped three shots for the clean sheet in the REDS' net.
The REDS are now 7-1-3 (W-L-T) with one regular season game remaining. They occupy second place in the AUS standings, three points back of Dalhousie and three up on Memorial. The Panthers fall to 1-9-1 and are ninth on the table.
The REDS close out their regular season schedule on Friday, October 17th when they visit Moncton. Game time is 5:00pm.
"We go into the last weekend with the ability to control our own destiny," said Coach Crossland. "We'll have a good week of training and then enjoy a break for Thanksgiving."
