(FREDERICTON, NB) Veteran midfielder Heidi Lauwerijssen scored twice to lead the UNB REDS in a 3-0 win over the Acadia Axewomen in the 2025 Atlantic University Sport season-opener for both sides, Friday evening at UNB's BMO Centre.
UNB's Mackenzie Walsh set up Lauwerijssen's first goal in the 21st minute, sending an almost perfect pass across the top of the box. Lauwerijssen then fired a hard shot over Acadia keeper Milena Ramirez.
The REDS took that 1-0 lead to half-time.
Lauwerijssen doubled UNB's lead in the 72nd minute, converting a Carolina Grzesniak corner kick for her second goal of the game.
Sarah Nason scored in added time to cement the REDS' 3-0 triumph.
Breanna Habinski earned the clean sheet in the UNB net while Ramirez took the loss for the Axewomen.
Lauwerijssen was named the Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
Acadia returns to action Sunday when they visit Mount Allison for a 1:00pm start.
The REDS take their 1-0 record to Cape Breton next Saturday (Sept. 6). Kick-off in Sydney is scheduled for 1:00pm.
