REDS Win Twice On Thursday
(REGINA, SK) The UNB REDS scored their first wins of the week at the U SPORTS Women's Curling Championship, in Regina, on Thursday.
The Jenna Campbell rink beat Calgary and Alberta.
In their early draw victory over Calgary, UNB scored three in the fifth end and stole two more in the sixth before shaking hands with the Dinos. The REDS won 8-1.
"We put it all together against Calgary," said Campbell. "We were feeling confident all game, supported each other, and relied on our preparation to have a great game. We were able to play our game right from the start and that helped us settle in quickly."
In their evening win over Alberta, the Campbell foursome took an early 3-1 lead in the second end, stole a single in the fourth, and counted three more in the seventh in an 8-3 triumph over the Pandas.
"In the game with Alberta, it was more of the same," added Campbell. "We carried forward everything we wanted to from the morning, and we stuck to our plan. We were able to set up the ends well and put pressure on them. Some key shots from Carly (Smith) and Rebecca (Watson) helped us into good scenarios. I felt like we had a very good handle on the ice and I'm really proud of both of our games on Thursday."
UNB is now 2-and-3 through five of their seven round robin games. That's good for a share of fifth place in the eight-team field.
Friday is a critical final day of round robin play for the REDS, who take on McMaster in a morning draw before facing host Regina in an afternoon draw. McMaster begins Friday with a 4-and-1 record while Regina starts the day at 3-and-2.
Semi-finals and medal games are scheduled for Saturday.
