REDS Remain Atop Standings
(FREDERICTON, NB) The Memorial men and UNB women lead their respective standings after two days of play at the Bell Atlantic University Sport Curling Championships, at Fredericton's Capital Winter Club.
On the men's side, the Sea-Hawks picked up a pair of wins, improving to 3-0.
In the day's first draw, Memorial counted two in the first end and stole two more in the second on route to a 7-2 win over UPEI. In the afternoon, the Hawks scored three in the fifth to clip the host UNB REDS 6-4.
The UNB women sandwiched two wins around a loss and are now 4-1.
In the morning draw, the REDS scored three in the second and added singles in the third, fourth, and fifth ends to beat Mount Allison 7-4.
UNB then dropped a 5-4 decision to Dalhousie in the afternoon draw before bouncing back to beat Saint Mary's 7-4 in the evening draw.
The Dalhousie men scored a pair of wins, beating STFX 9-3 in the afternoon and UPEI 5-4 in the evening.
The UPEI women split on the day.
In the afternoon, they fell 6-5 to Memorial. In the evening draw, the Panthers scored in five consecutive ends in a 7-1 win over the Mounties.
Other women's action saw Saint Mary's beat STFX 7-5 in the morning draw and Dal beat the X-Women 7-3 in the evening draw.
Day three begins at 9:00am Saturday with Draw Six. Draws Seven and Eight follow at 1:30 and 6:00pm. Draw Eight will include the men's semi-final, featuring the 2nd and 3rd place teams.
Champions will be determined Sunday with winners and runners-up advancing to the U SPORTS Championships, in Regina, February 17-21.
