REDS Open U SPORTS Championship With Win
(QUEBEC CITY, QC) The No. 2 seeded UNB REDS advanced to the semi-finals at the U SPORTS Women's Basketball Championship in Quebec City with a decisive 81-63 win over the No. 7 Carleton Ravens on Thursday afternoon.
Veteran forward Katie Butts, named a U SPORTS 2nd Team All-Canadian on Wednesday night, scored a game-high 31 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds to lead the REDS.
The REDS established themselves early, building a 9-2 lead.
The Ravens, finalists in the OUA, wouldn't let the REDS really extend their early lead and UNB was up 22-18 after one quarter.
In the second, Leah Travers hit a long-distance shot as time expired, and the REDS took a 36-33 lead to the half-time break.
In the third quarter, the REDS continued to exert themselves on offence while playing tight defence. UNB led 57-50 through three.
In the fourth quarter Butts dominated beneath both baskets and Ann Bastien struck a three-pointer with about 3:30 to play that put the REDS up 75-59. UNB never looked back.
Katie McAffee scored 11 points for the REDS while Alyssa Jenkins came off the REDS bench to score 10 points and pull down three rebounds. Zoe Olscamp, also off the bench, had eight points and three rebounds.
Kyana-Jade Poulin led the Ravens with 23 points while Tyanne Matosas-Adderley scored a dozen. Nathalie Francis came off the Carleton bench to grab a team-high nine rebounds.
The REDS now move to the semi-final round where they'll face a to-be-determined opponent on Saturday evening.
