Bastien And Butts Lead REDS Over Tigers
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS rode a 14-0 run late in the opening quarter to an early 23-4 lead on the Dalhousie Tigers and never looked back in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action, Saturday evening at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
The REDS led 38-19 at the half and held on for a comfortable 70-52 victory, their ninth straight.
Ann Bastien led the REDS with 12 points, seven assists, and six rebounds, and was named Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
Katie Butts contributed 16 points, three rebounds, and a block. Her 16 points ties Butts with Claire Colborne (2010-11 – 2013-14) for fourth on UNB's women's basketball's all-time scoring list with 1109 regular season points.
Katie McAffee scored 11 points and had three steals while Zoe Olscamp came off the REDS bench to score eight points and grab five rebounds.
Melina Collins came off the Dal bench to lead her team, scoring 15 points and grabbing a pair of rebounds.
Samantha Manieri had seven points and seven rebounds, and Cairo Henning scored six points, dished out six assists, and pulled down four rebounds.
The Tigers shot just 28.8% from the field.
UNB improves to 15-1 and continue to lead the AUS standings.
Dal is now 3-12, good for seventh place.
The REDS return to action next Saturday when they travel to Antigonish to take on the STFX X-Women. Tip-off is at 6:00pm.
