REDS Remain Unbeaten
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS won their sixth consecutive Atlantic University Sport women's basketball game, 93-55 over the Saint Mary's Huskies on Saturday afternoon at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
Kylee Speedy led the home team with 18 points. She was named Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
The Huskies got off to a strong start, building an early 14-4 first quarter lead which prompted a REDS time-out.
SMU's AJ Deng-Oman held the hot hand early, sinking three consecutive three-point shots to give the Huskies their 10-point advantage.
Saint Mary's led 21-19 after one quarter.
A Speedy three-point shot gave UNB a 22-21 edge early in the second quarter and the REDS began building an insurmountable lead.
UNB took a 41-32 lead to the half-time break.
Steady defensive pressure allowed the REDS to extend their lead in the third quarter to 62-43, pushing the Huskies to make shots late in the shot clock on numerous possessions.
Ann Bastien and Speedy hit three-point baskets on back-to-back possessions in the fourth quarter as the REDS rolled to their 93-55 triumph.
Second-year RED Zoe Olscamp scored a career-high 16 points while Bastien came off the REDS bench to score 14 and hand out half a dozen assists.
First-year RED Clance MacIntyre registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Leah Travers and Alyssa Jenkins both scored 10 each.
Deng-Oman finished with 19 points in the Huskies' losing effort while Emily Dikdan added 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Saint Mary's bench was held to just nine points.
The REDS are now 6-and-0, good for first place in the AUS standings, while the Huskies fall to 2-and-4.
The REDS return to action on Friday when they visit Acadia. Game time is 6:00pm.
The Huskies will host the Dal Tigers the same night. That game is also scheduled for a 6:00pm tip.
