REDS Win Fifth Straight
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS used a hot second quarter to build a lead and never looked back in a 78-62 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action, Friday evening at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
Katie McAffee scored 18 points and dished out a half dozen assists to lead the REDS.
The first five minutes saw the home team struggle to keep pace, falling behind 12-7. That prompted a time-out call by REDS' head coach Erin McAleenan.
Saint Mary's led 22-18 at the end of one quarter.
The REDS erupted for 27 in the second quarter to take a 45-33 lead into the half-time break.
They ended the half on a 9-0 run which included back-to-back threes by Leah Travers followed by a three-pointer from Addie Mombourquette.
Travers was a sparkling 4-for-5 from three-point range in the opening half.
The Huskies were able to slow the REDS down in the third quarter, but they couldn't completely stop UNB and the REDS led 62-49 after 30 minutes of play and 78-62 at the final buzzer.
Travers finished the night with 15 points and was named Tim Horton's Player of the Game while Zoe Olscamp dropped eleven.
Ann Bastien came off the REDS bench to score nine points and add five assists.
Emily Dikdan scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Huskies. She also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Lauren Armstrong contributed 10 points and nine rebounds to the Saint Mary's effort.
With the win, the REDS improve to 5-and-0 while the Huskies falls to 2-and-3.
The teams meet again Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm.
