REDS Charge Past Gee Gees
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS overcame a three-point half-time deficit and beat the Ottawa Gee Gees 84-74 in the feature game on day two of UNB's pre-season Helen Campbell Tournament.
Katie Butts led all scorers with 23 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds to lead the home squad.
Among Butts' 23 points were back-to-back threes that pushed UNB's lead, at the time, to 13 points.
Katie McAffee, named Stewart-McKelvey Player of the Game, scored 13 points. Kylee Speedy scored 10 points and dished out half a dozen assists.
Among Speedy's total were a couple of fourth quarter three-point baskets.
Ivany Rheault-Langué led the Gee Gees offence with 22 points while native New Brunswickers Bailey Russell and Allie McCarthy contributed 20 and 14 points respectively.
With the win, the REDS are now 2-and-0 while Ottawa is 1-1.
In Saturday's early game, Shannon Neita scored a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds as the STFX X-Women dumped the Lethbridge Pronghorns 83-50.
Mali Straker scored a game-high 15 points for X while Piper Dobbelsteyn led the Pronghorns with just 10 points.
The Campbell wraps up Sunday.
Lethbridge faces Ottawa in a 10:00am start. The REDS and X-Women square off in a game scheduled to tip-off at 2:00pm.
