Shoot For The Cure 2022
(FREDERICTON, NB) The 15th edition of U SPORTS women’s basketball ‘Shoot for the Cure’ is underway, running until January 30th.
For the UNB REDS, the 2022 edition, like in 2021, will feature a number of online events.
“We hoped 2022 would allow us to have our events in person, but we’ve had to pivot to mostly online events once again,” said Jeff Speedy, head coach of the REDS’ women’s basketball team, and project manager for the U SPORTS Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association’s Shoot for the Cure initiative. “We were forced to have our 2021 Stewart McKelvey Think Pink-Shoot For The Cure events online, and it went very well, allowing us to raise more than $16,000, more than we’ve ever raised before, so we’re hoping 2022 is just as successful.”
First run in 2007, the nation-wide fundraising initiative raises money for the Canadian Cancer Society, and other related local and provincial charities, to help fight breast cancer.
Typically, the initiative culminates with a cheque presentation during the U SPORTS Women’s Basketball Championship. Given the emphasis on safety and evolving pandemic protocols, this year’s event will feature mostly online programs.
The REDS are hosting an online auction. You can bid on auction items here: https://www.32auctions.com/RedsSFTC2022
Along with the auction, five REDS teams will offer online events that can be accessed via donation.
Speedy’s women’s basketball team will take part in a virtual 1-on-1 skills contest with the Acadia Axewomen.
The REDS’ men’s basketball team is holding a virtual “Grand In Your Hand” 50/50-type draw.
UNB’s women’s volleyball team is soliciting donations in their ‘Dig for the Cure’ program. As they reach certain fundraising milestones, team members will be performing various physical efforts.
The REDS’ women’s soccer team is hosting a virtual trivia night, and UNB’s women’s hockey team will host an online skills session and a virtual bingo game.
Please see the REDS’ social media platforms for more details on these events.
Should public health restrictions ease in the near future, and Atlantic University Sport competition resume, the REDS will look to hold in-person events too.
“Hopefully, we’re back playing games in February so we can have some Think Pink events at the Currie Center and the Aitken Centre,” said Speedy. “In the meantime, our teams have come up with some great ideas, and we’re looking forward to another successful Shoot for the Cure.”
The national Shoot for the Cure goal in 2022 is $100,000, which would bring U SPORTS’ cumulative total, over 15 years, to $1.69 Million.
