REDS Fall In Five Sets
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS and Montreal Carabins needed five sets to determine a winner of Friday's RSEQ men's volleyball match at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
In the end, the visitors prevailed 3-2, beating the REDS 25-22, 24-26, 20-25, 25-18, and 17-15.
In a fast-paced first set, the teams traded points most of the way.
Montreal built a late lead and won the opener 25-22.
The second set was close as well, with neither side able to establish a lead of much more than a couple of points.
Trailing 18-16, UNB called a timeout and managed to slow the Carabins push, drawing even at 19-19, then pulling ahead on route to a 26-24 set win.
The third set saw the home team pull out to an early 11-8 lead.
Uncharacteristic Montreal errors allowed UNB to extend the lead to 23-17.
Montreal saved two set points in a late rally, but the REDS won 25-20 for a two-sets-to-one lead.
In the fourth set Montreal established a lead, one that UNB slowly chipped away at, pulling even 17-17.
But the Carabin persevered and won the set 25-18, forcing a deciding set.
A closely fought fifth set saw the teams tied throughout before Montreal scored a 17-15 win to take the match 3-2.
Lucas Maffia led the REDS with 14 kills and 17 digs while Nicolas Losier registered 18 kills.
First-year RED Alex Bourque had a game-high 22 digs.
Connor Waugh knocked down 11 kills and Finn McMorran added digs.
Antoine Cazabon led Montreal with a game-high 22 kills. He added 13 digs.
Vincent Tremblay recorded 19 digs and Lucas Genier and Étienne Grenier put up 13 and 12 blocks respectively.
UNB is now 2-3 while Montreal improves to 3-1.
The REDS and Carabins will conclude their two-match weekend series on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 1:00pm Atlantic.
