REDS Drop RSEQ Opener
(QUEBEC CITY, QC) The UNB REDS fell in straight sets to the Laval Rouge et Or in their 2025-2026 RSEQ season opener, Friday night in Quebec City.
Laval won 25-20, 25-18, and 25-19.
"We were up against a very exerienced Laval squad and stayed neck and neck until the midway point of each set," said REDS' head coach Dan McMorran. "We weren't able to maintain the consistency needed to finish"
First-year RED Moritz Möhring led UNB offensively with eight kills while Lucas Maffia recorded 10 digs.
After leading the conference in blocks last season, UNB managed just two against the Rouge et Or.
"We knew coming to Laval that it was going to be a challenge," said REDS' second-year setter Finn McMorran. "In the end, they were simply more efficient than we were. Service pressure wasn't there on our part which made their job easy."
Max Losier led the home team with 11 kills and Zack Morneau had 11 digs.
"The match gave us a great chance to see a number of different lineups, with 13 players getting valuable floor time," said Coach McMorran. "Moritz was outstanding in his U SPORTS debut, leading all attackers with an impressive .571 hitting percentage."
The REDS and Rouge et Or meet again Saturday afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 2:00pm Atlantic.
"We'll take a lot from this one and look forward to the opportunity to regroup and compete again tomorrow," said McMorran.
