Coy and Waugh Names Return To REDS
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS men’s volleyball team is adding local products Grady Coy and Connor Waugh to their recruiting class of 2024.
The pair, both members of Fredericton High School’s back-to-back provincial champions and a team that went 36-and-0 in 2023-24 without dropping a single set, have signed U SPORTS Letters of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2024-2025 RSEQ season.
The 6’3” Waugh, an outside hitter, from Hanwell, is a veteran member of the Reds Volleyball Club, playing at the 18U and 17U levels, and is a member of Team New Brunswick’s High Performance Beach and Canada Cup teams.
In 2023, Waugh partnered with fellow REDS recruit Finn McMorran to win the 16U national beach championship and helped the Reds win the 18U provincial title.
“I consider myself to be a hard-working individual that always gives a hundred percent,” said Waugh. “I’ve had high-level coaching throughout my career, shaping me into a versatile player with a high-level game IQ. I’m willing to fill any role I’m asked to.”
Coy, a 6’2” left side, from Fredericton is also a veteran member of the Reds Volleyball Club, playing at the 14U, 16U, and 18U levels and helping win provincial titles at all three levels.
At the 2024 New Brunswick high school championship, Coy was named the player of the game in the gold medal match.
“I’ve wanted to play for UNB as long as I can remember,” said Coy. “I want to follow in my father’s footsteps, as he played at UNB. I love the program and have always dreamed of getting a chance to play on that court.”
“As the son of two UNB volleyball alumni, I’m extremely excited to follow in my parents’ footsteps,” added Waugh.
“Connor is a skilled all-round player with a strong work ethic,” said REDS’ head coach Dan McMorran, who has coached both Waugh and Coy in the Reds system and at Fredericton High. “As he continues to develop the physicality needed for the next level, we feel he can strengthen our squad in the future.”
“Grady is a hard-working outside who has made great improvements in the last few years,” said McMorran. “He’s a good team guy, and with a commitment to developing the tools needed to be a successful U SPORTS outside, we feel he can also strengthen that position down the road.”
Both Coy and Waugh say they’re eager to get to work and earn their spots.
Waugh will study Computer Science while attending UNB while Coy will study Business Administration.
