REDS Add Newfoundland Setter
(FREDERICTON, NB) Having recruited successfully in Newfoundland and Labrador in the past, the UNB REDS men’s volleyball team is drawing from the province’s talent pool again.
5’11” setter Nathan Marshall, from Mount Pearl, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2022-2023 RSEQ men’s volleyball season.
“Nathan is a quality setter who has had a lot of success leading the teams he’s played for over the past few years,” said REDS head coach Dan McMorran. “He’s a motivated athlete who brings an energy and passion to the floor, while being able to run a varied offence.”
Finishing his Grade 12 year at Mount Pearl’s O’Donel High School, Marshall has been a member of the Patriots’ varsity boys’ team for three seasons.
The 17-year-old is also a veteran member of Pythons Volleyball club programs, helping them earn a silver medal in the U15 division at the national club championships in 2019. Marshall was named tournament MVP at the 2019 Eastern Elite Championship, helping the Pythons win the U15 division with a perfect 8-and-0 record.
“For years I’ve wanted to put on a REDS uniform,” said Marshall. “I know some local guys who’ve gone there, and seeing them play has made me want to follow in their footsteps. The REDS’ program is a strong one and one that I’m eager to join.”
A two-time finalist for the Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association’s male player of the year award, Marshall is currently a member of the province’s Canada Games team.
“As a setter you need to be mentally capable of running the floor, which is something I excel at. Communication is important to me. I have a great head for the game and a strong work ethic. I also strive to bring energy and a positive attitude to the team whenever I step on the floor, no matter if it’s a game or a practice.”
In the short-term, Marshall hopes he can adapt quickly to the speed of the game at the university level. Longer-term, he wants to help UNB win in the RSEQ and help get the REDS to the national championship tournament.
“He’ll add some depth to our setting position,” said Coach McMorran. “I’m excited to see him develop both physically and technically in the coming seasons.”
Marshall will study Kinesiology while attending UNB.
