Another Mills Joining REDS
(FREDERICTON, NB) After helping his high school and club teams to championships in 2021, Hayden Mills has turned his attention to the UNB REDS.
Mills, a 6’6” outside hitter, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2022-2023 RSEQ men’s volleyball season.
“Having the opportunity to play alongside such accomplished, experienced and hard-working individuals who have an incredible dynamic together has always been appealing, and UNB has opened that door to me,” said Mills. “I also have a very unique opportunity, as playing for the REDS permits me to play alongside my older brother for the first time in my life.”
Hayden is the younger brother of current REDS blocker Owen Mills.
Finishing his Grade 12 year at Fredericton’s École Sainte-Anne, Mills helped lead ESA to a 2021 New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association district championship. He was named the team’s Coaches Choice Award winner.
A veteran member of Fredericton’s Spartans Volleyball Club, Mills was a member of the club’s U18 side that captured a provincial championship in 2021.
Mills was a member of New Brunswick’s U16 Canada Cup team and is currently a member of the province’s Canada Games development team.
“Hayden is a talented, multi-sport athlete, who at 6’6” and only 16, shows great promise,” said REDS head coach Dan McMorran. “He’s also another strong academic joining our ranks, and as he continues to develop physically, we’re excited about his future in our program.”
Mills will look to improve all aspects of his game in his first season with the REDS, maximizing his time in the gym and UNB’s training facilities.
Longer-term, he’d like to one day be an All-Canadian, but says, more importantly, he wants to help the REDS become RSEQ champions and contenders at the national championship.
“I believe I bring great communication and energy to a team, on the court or from the sideline,” said Mills. “
Mills will study Forestry while attending UNB.
