REDS Run On Day 1 At U SPORTS Championships
(WINNIPEG, MB) Ashley Morrow’s fourth place finish in the women’s weight throw was the highlight for the UNB REDS on the first day of competition, Thursday, at the U SPORTS Track & Field Championships, in Winnipeg.
Morrow’s toss of 18.62m saw her finish just off the medal podium.
UNB had a difficult day on the track, falling short of qualifying for finals in a number of events.
In the men’s 60 metres, Jackson Banks ran 10th in preliminaries, missing the final by just 3/100ths of a second.
In the women’s 60 metres, Shaniece Smikle was 11th in the preliminaries and missed the final by 9/100ths of a second.
Both later ran in relay heats.
In the women’s 4-by-200-metre relay heats, the UNB foursome of Smikle, Anna Somers, Abby Dube, and Alison Dewar finished 13th.
In the men’s 4-by-200-metre relay prelims, the REDS team of Banks, Camrie Sharpe, Jack Mellish, and Owen Wood were 10th, and missed the final by 8/10ths of a second.
Day two, Friday, will see the REDS competing in a number of events on both the field and track, including the women’s 1000-metres, the men’s 60-metre hurdles, and the men’s 4-by-800-metre relay.
