Kingston Sets UNB Record At U SPORTS Championships
(MARKHAM, ON) Blake Kingston set a new UNB record in the men’s 200-metre breaststroke on the second day of competition at the U SPORTS Swimming Championships, in Markham, Ontario.
In Friday morning’s preliminaries, Kingston posted a time of 2:12.46, good for seventh and a spot in the A Final. The time also broke Kingston’s old school record in the event by almost half a second.
Kingston was seventh in the A Final.
“My strategy and plan was to go and compete with the top guys, and I went out with them, but couldn’t quite hold it,” he said. “Getting to race with the best is an opportunity I’m glad I’ve experienced.”
“I’m very pleased with the day and a new school record,” added Kingston.
Other results in preliminaries saw Maxime Kenny place 26th in the 100-metre backstroke and 40th in the 50-metre butterfly, Camden Reid place 39th in the 200-metre individual medley and 58th in the 50-metre fly, and Matthew de Goey swam 38th in the 50-fly.
On the women’s side, Hannah MacLeod was 32nd in the 50-metre freestyle and 37th in the 50-metre butterfly.
“In my first year, this seemed like an impossible goal,” said MacLeod. “But over the years, even through my injuries, I picked away at the times and I’m happy to finally have reached this goal.”
“It’s a great way to wrap up my final meet as a RED,” she added.
Maria McDougall was 37th in the 50-free and 57th in the 50-fly.
