(CHARLOTTETOWN, PE) Hunter Delahunt's Atlantic University Sport-leading eighth goal of the season gave the UNB REDS a 2-1 victory over the UPEI Panthers, Sunday evening in Charlottetown.
Delahunt took advantage of confusion among Panthers defenders in the 85th minute.
Following a cross into the box, he fired the ball past UPEI keeper Javier Zaragoza, tying Delahunt with UPEI's Jahmal Boursiquot for the conference's goal-scoring lead.
After a scoreless first half, UNB's Simon Bisaillon opened the scoring when he headed a corner kick past Zaragoza in the 47th minute.
Riad Jaha drew the Panthers even in the 59th minute before Delahunt's late heroics.
"It was a difficult win today," said REDS' head coach Barry Morrison. "We showed great belief and resilience. It's always difficult to travel to UPEI and get wins. Today the team put in a massive second half and needed until the 85th minute to find the winner."
The REDS peppered Zaragoza with shots all evening. He made ten saves on a dozen UNB shots.
Jensen Brown, in the UNB net, made a pair of saves on three shots.
"Ian (Aleong) and Simon were relentless at centreback, needing to be aggressive and demanding to continue to propel us forward every minute of the game."
With the win, the REDS are now 7-3-1 (W-L-T) and tied for second place in the AUS standings with 22 points. The Panthers a 3-8-0 and occupy eight place.
Both teams see their next action on Friday, October 17th.
The Panthers visit Dal while the REDS are in Moncton. Both games are scheduled for 7:30pm starts.
