(SACKVILLE, NB) The UNB REDS beat the Mount Allison Mounties 3-1 in Atlantic University Sport men's soccer action on Saturday, in Sackville.
"We feel excited about the win today," said REDS' head coach Barry Morrison. "We're in a battle for a playoff spot and these points were critical for us heading into the Thanksgiving break."
UNB's Hunter Delahunt (Boundary Creek, NB) found the opener, 18 minutes in, putting home a well-played cross from Alex Oprea (Winnipeg, MB).
The REDS doubled their advantage just three minutes later when Andrew Ward (Ottawa, ON) would convert a corner kick.
The REDS took that 2-0 lead to the half-time break.
The home side would not go down quietly, and Lucas Abbass (Halifax, NS) brought the Mounties back to within one with a calm, collected finish.
Pressure from the Mounties would be a staple of the second half, but it would be the REDS who'd find the next goal with Ward scoring his second of the game to put UNB up 3-1.
"It's good for the guys to get all three points," said Ward. "It's been a while. It's a good feeling as we had a rough time out last week. It was good to get the win."
With the win, UNB is now 3-5-2 (W-L-T), good for sixth place in the AUS standings with two regular season games to play.
"The guys played well and showed great belief in our ability to finish that game," said Coach Morrison.
The REDS return to action on Wednesday, October 16th when they visit Moncton for a 7:15pm start.
Mount Allison hosts Dalhousie on Sunday. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:15pm.
