REDS Add TSS Pair
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS men’s soccer team is adding fullback Christopher Schmit and winger Euan Aitchison to their recruiting class of 2021.
Both have signed U SPORTS Letters of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2021-2022 Atlantic University Sport season.
Schmit and Aitchison are familiar with each other, coming from the same Richmond, BC-based TSS Football Club program.
“It’s great to have both of these players coming from the TSS environment,” said REDS head coach Barry Morrison. “They’ve had several years of experience playing at the senior level together, which will be a great help as they adapt to the fast and physical style of play here in the AUS.”
Aitchison, from Tsawwassen, helped the Rovers U21 side win the 2019 Vancouver Metro Soccer League championship, and was part of Vancouver College’s 2018 AAA provincial high school championship team.
“I like Euan for his ability to be a threat every time he’s on the ball,” said Coach Morrison. “He’s exciting to watch and will develop into a serious attacking threat for our team over the coming seasons. I expect him to be able to score goals and create scoring opportunities for his teammates.”
“I’m a hard-working and determined athlete,” said Aitchison. “I love challenging people one on one, and feel that challenging yourself is, ultimately, the only way to grow as a player. If I work hard in practice, it will push both me and other players to grow and become better.”
Aitchison will pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree while attending UNB.
Like Aitchison, Schmit was also a member of the TSS U21 side that captured the Vancouver Metro Soccer League’s 2019 title.
He was the Rovers Youth Male Player of the Year in 2019 and helped Vancouver’s Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School win the 2018 Vancouver junior boys high school championship.
“I’ve been very impressed with what I’ve seen from Christopher in game footage,” said Morrison. “After talking with his coaches, I know he’s both the right sort of player and has the right character to contribute in a big way to our program. He works hard, defends well in one-on-one situations, and can provide a great attacking presence.”
“I bring a highly technical skill set and a strong drive to succeed,” said Schmit. “I think I’m good at getting the best out of my teammates by exhibiting leadership qualities too.”
Schmit will study Engineering while attending UNB.
The REDS men’s soccer team is scheduled to open their 2021 AUS regular season schedule on Saturday, September 11th, at Dalhousie.
