Coach's Corner - Men's Soccer- Week #7 Udate
It was a cold, wet, and windy day as the Varsity Reds took to the field against the Memorial Sea Hawks. The Newfound boys came out playing with a purpose and proved to be much better than their record would suggest. The stiff breeze at their backs helped the Sea Hawks keep the majority of the first half action in the UNB end. MUN had a good opportunity in the early moments but UNB’s keeper Matt Lally dealt with the difficult low shot. The rest of the first half proved to be a stalemate as MUN failed to capitalize with the wind advantage and UNB struggled to create much offensively as they played into the breeze. The Varsity Reds were much better the second half and their persistent attack led to some quality chances at the Sea Hawks goal. Ten minutes into the second frame, Karel Prickett played a ball into striker Will Allen, who laid the ball back into the midfield for Russell Carson. Russell played the ball wide to JC Campeau whose combination of skill and determination allowed him to beat two defenders and set up Shea Nordheim for his first UNB goal. Despite having the majority of the play UNB could not score another. They would pay for this when a Sea Hawks’ corner was knocked out of Lally’s hands and quickly deposited into the UNB goal.
FINAL SCORE: UNB – 1, MUN – 1
UNB PLAYER OF THE GAME: RUSSELL CARSON
UNB IRVING HARD HAT WINNERS: JC CAMPEAU & KEN MORRISON
OCTOBER 25TH: UNB HOSTS MUN
Twenty-four hours later, and the two teams were back on Chapman Field. This time the sun was shining but the wind was still blowing. Again UNB defended against the wind for the first half. This day the wind was not going to slow down the Varsity Reds’ attack. The UNB boys controlled the game for the entire ninety minutes and MUN never really threatened to score. At the thirty-first minute, Ken Morrison was fouled thirty yards from goal and made the Sea Hawks pay as he bent the resulting free kick past the MUN keeper. Twenty-five minutes later, and UNB’s big striker, Galen Smith, was set free on a partial break-away. The MUN defender had no choice but to foul Smith as he was shooting. Ken Morrison stepped up to blast the resulting penalty into the mesh. Morgan Kenny, in his debut within the UNB net, secured the shut-out.
FINAL SCORE: UNB – 2, MUN-0
UNB PLAYER OF THE GAME: KEN MORRISON
UNB IRVING HARD HAT WINNERS: GALEN SMITH & ROD RAMSDEN
