Sambrook Transfers To REDS
(FREDERICTON, NB) Veteran defenceman Trent Sambrook is joining the 2026 recruiting class of the eight-time defending Atlantic University Sport champions, the UNB REDS.
The 24-year-old, from Medora, Manitoba, joins the REDS as a transfer from the now defunct Mercyhurst University Lakers of the NCAA.
“Trent is another big addition from the NCAA ranks,” said REDS’ head coach Rob Hennigar. “His compete and determination will be big for our program.”
The 6’0” Sambrook spent three seasons with the Division 1 Lakers, skating in 84 regular season games and recording three goals and 25 assists.
His time at Mercyhurst was preceded by four solid seasons with the Winkler Flyers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.
“I’m honoured to be joining the REDS,” said Sambrook. “They’ve established themselves in U SPORTS as a top team with their success and class. I’m excited and grateful to be joining such a tight knit group that not only excels on the ice but holds themselves to standards of excellence in every aspect.”
“He plays hard and competes every shift, and he wants to be part of the UNB program,” said Coach Hennigar. “He can bring offence and has the ability to play on special teams. He’s passionate about getting better and wants to help lead the group.”
Sambrook chose UNB over other options, saying the program’s culture and professionalism set the REDS apart.
“I believe I see the ice well, which allows me to be one step ahead to make plays,” he said. “I like to utilize my skating to help generate offence and play a 200-foot game. I bring experience in all types of situations, and I bring experience as a leader which I’ll use on and off the ice throughout my last two seasons.”
Sambrook says making an immediate impact and bringing his best effort daily are among his short-term goals.
“My ultimate goal is to win a national championship,” he added. “UNB has the record and dedication that proves we can have success.”
Sambrook will study Business while attending UNB.
