Györ Goalie Commits To REDS
(FREDERICTON, NB) As the eight-time defending Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey champion UNB REDS continue to build towards the 2026-2027 season, they’re adding veteran goaltender Greg Orosz to their 2026 recruiting class.
The 23-year-old, from Györ, Hungary, has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the coming season.
“Coach Hennigar has helped build one of the most successful programs in the country, win championships, develop professional players, and create a winning culture. With my experience playing Division 1 against national champions and top-ranked programs every weekend, I believe he sees me as someone who can contribute to that culture,” said Orosz. “I’m really excited for the opportunity.”
Orosz spent the past three seasons at the University of Alaska-Anchorage, appearing in more than 30 regular season games with the under-achieving Seawolves.
“He’s a veteran goalie that was highly coveted coming out of junior in the United States,” said REDS’ head coach Rob Hennigar. “He was a starter at the NCAA level, and we think, in our system, he can thrive and get back to the level he was at a few years ago.”
“I feel like Coach Hennigar understands my situation really well,” said Orosz. “He sees the potential in me. This past season didn’t go the way I expected and during my time in Alaska we weren’t able to achieve the team success we were working toward. At the end of the day, I’m a competitive athlete and I want to win.”
Prior to his time in Anchorage, Orosz was a standout performer with Aberdeen and Odessa, both of the North American Hockey League.
He’s also represented Hungary at numerous international tournaments, including the 2021-22 world junior championships, in the 1A division.
“I would describe myself as hardworking, athletic, and extremely competitive,” said Orosz. “I love understanding how players think so I can stay one step ahead of them. The game is too fast to rely on guessing. To be successful as a goalie, you have to be prepared, stay sharp, and do your homework. I take a lot of pride in that side of the game.”
“His size and work ethic, along with his off-ice habits, make him a key addition for us,” said Coach Hennigar of the 6’3” 23-year-old who chose UNB over other options.
“The more I learned about UNB and the hockey program, the more it felt like an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” he said. “The team seems close-knit, everything is run professionally, and there’s a great alumni network. Most importantly, it’s a place where we’ll have the opportunity to compete for championships. When you combine those things, UNB stood out.”
Orosz says his immediate goals include settling in at a new school and in a new city, and helping the REDS get off to a strong start. Long-term, he wants to win.
Orosz will pursue a master’s degree in Sport and Recreation Management while attending UNB.
