Iasenza 'Returning' to Aitken Centre
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS, eight-time defending Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey champions, are adding defender Franky Iasenza to their recruiting class of 2026.
The former Moncton Wildcat, from Pointe-Claire, Quebec, is joining the REDS in a transfer from the Mercyhurst University Lakers, a now-defunct NCAA program.
“He’s a hard-nosed defenceman that’s hard to play against,” said REDS’ head coach Rob Hennigar. “He plays physical and takes pride in the defensive zone while maintaining the ability to add offence.”
Last season, Iasenza played in 29 games with the Lakers, scoring a goal and adding six assists.
Before joining the team at Mercyhurst, he played 274 Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League regular season games with Moncton and Victoriaville, scoring 21 goals and 76 assists.
“It’s a huge honour and privilege to be joining a program like the REDS,” said the 21-year-old. “To have the opportunity to wear the REDS jersey and be part of their tradition means a lot to me. I’m excited to contribute to the team and continue growing.”
Of his almost 275 QMJHL games, Iasenza played 113 over parts of three seasons with the Wildcats, scoring eight goals and 30 assists.
“What really set UNB apart was the standard of excellence throughout the program,” he said. “From the way the players are treated, to the coaching staff, facilities, and overall culture. Everything is done at the first-class level.”
The 6’1” Iasenza describes himself as a reliable, two-way defender who moves the puck efficiently and makes smart decisions under pressure. He says he likes to create plays and join the rush when the opportunity arises.
“I think Coach Hennigar sees the work ethic and determination that I bring,” he said. “I’m always looking for ways to improve my game. I also take pride in being a good teammate, bringing a positive attitude, and doing whatever is asked of me to help the team succeed.”
Iasenza says his time in Moncton provided him with valuable insight on the REDS.
“I played with several players who went on to play at UNB and they’ve spoken highly of the program and their experience there,” he said. “I became familiar with the program when I was with the VRed Prospects. All of that helped shape my interest in UNB and made the decision easier when the opportunity came along.”
“We’ve known Franky since his days in the VRed Prospects,” said Coach Hennigar. “We’ve always loved his energy and attitude. He’ll be a big part of our future and we’re excited to get started with him.”
Iasenza counts continuing to develop as a player, earning the trust of the coaching staff, and helping the team in whatever way he can among his short-term goals. Longer-term, he wants to help win championships and maintain the standards set by those who came before him.
