REDS Open Class Of '26 With Homegrown Forward
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS, eight-time defending Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey champions, are naming forward Angelo Fullerton the first member of their recruiting class of 2026.
The 20-year-old Fullerton has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2026-2027 AUS season.
“What sold me on UNB was the hockey culture and the expectation to be great every year,” said the Quispamsis native. “When I visited it was very clear talking to the coaches and players, as well as when looking up into the Aitken Centre rafters, that UNB is one of the most successful schools in the country, and I want to be a part of that.”
The left-winger played 231 games, regular season and playoffs, over four Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League seasons with the Cape Breton Eagles and Saint John Sea Dogs.
“We’re very excited to land Angelo at UNB,” said REDS’ head coach Rob Hennigar. “He had a big year with the Sea Dogs and had a lot of interest not just in U SPORTS but also from down south. His size and desire to compete every night make him a key addition to our group.”
Fullerton is coming off his best major junior season, having scored 31 goals and 21 assists in 65 games with Saint John in 2025-2026.
“This past season saw Angelo shine with Saint John, and in a bigger role,” said Coach Hennigar. “His confidence grew and he proved that he could not only play hard every night but also produce at a high level. We think he’s just scratching the surface as to what he can do.”
“I think I had a great summer of training and became a much faster and stronger skater which led to me being able to have the puck on my stick more often in games,” said Fullerton. “I began to find a lot of confidence, and it continued to build throughout the year as I got more and more offensive opportunities because of my play.”
Fullerton believes the REDS were interested in him because of his ability to play in all situations.
He says he’ll buy into any role the team needs him to play and adds he’s no stranger to adversity and will always look to over-achieve, whether it be on the ice or off.
“I’m a complete player who is responsible in the defensive zone and on the penalty kill, I have a strong forechecking game and can score as well,” he said.
Fullerton says his short-term goal is to continue growing as a student-athlete. Long-term, he’s looking forward to representing his home province, especially when UNB plays host to the national men’s university hockey championship tournament, in 2028.
Fullerton will study Business while attending UNB.
