Morgan's Pair Leads REDS Past Moncton
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS scored three times in the third period to beat the Moncton Aigles Bleus 4-1 in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey, Wednesday night at UNB's Aitken Centre.
Cody Morgan scored two of UNB's third period markers, including the eventual game winner.
Moncton's Jeremy D'Astous opened the scoring just 3:49 into the game, but the REDS responded quickly.
About five minutes later, REDS' captain Colton Kammerer fired a slap shot from the point that found its way past Moncton goalie Olivier Adam.
The teams played through a scoreless but exciting second period before the REDS erupted in the third.
Morgan's first came less than two minutes in when he skated through the slot and then wide and fired a seeing-eye to the top corner, past Adam.
Braeden MacPhee scored a powerplay goal at 7:37 of the third to give UNB a 3-1 lead and Morgan potted an empty net goal with 60 seconds left on the clock.
REDS' goalie Remi Delafontaine made 24 saves for the win and was named the Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
Adam, in the Moncton net, made 25 saves on the 28 shots he faced.
The win, UNB's fourth straight, was an important one for the REDS and keeps them in the hunt for second place in the AUS standings and a first-round playoff bye. They're now 8-2 in their last ten games.
UNB's record improves to 19-8-2-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL), good for a share of first place with Moncton.
The Aigles Bleus are 19-8-1-1.
Moncton plays their final regular season home game on Friday when they host UPEI.
The REDS will visit the Panthers on Saturday for their regular season finale. That game is scheduled for a 7:00pm start.
