(FREDERICTON, NB) Braeden MacPhee scored twice to lead the UNB REDS in a 6-3 win over the Acadia Axemen in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey play, Saturday night at UNB's Aitken Centre.
The win came in UNB's 33rd Mark Jeffrey Memorial Game, attended by more than 2000 spectators.
MacPhee scored the only goal of the opening period at the 13:29 mark, converting a pass from behind the Acadia net from linemate Thomas Larouche.
His second came just 1:18 into the second period when he pounced on a rebound given up by Acadia goalie Thomas Couture and fired a one-timer into the net.
Cole Huckins, Cody Morgan, Justin Nolet, and Mike Petizian also scored for UNB.
Larouche finished the night with three assists, while Eli Barnett and Nicolas Savoie each registered a pair.
Bailey Peach, Liam Kidney, and Corson Hopwo scored for the Axemen.
Remi Delafontaine made 17 saves on 20 shots for the win the UNB net. Couture gave up six goals on 36 shots in the loss.
With the win, the REDS improve to 18-8-2-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) and sit second in the AUS standings, just two points back of first place Moncton.
Acadia drops to 16-7-1-3. The Axemen are third, two points back of the REDS.
Both the REDS and Axemen return to action Wednesday night.
The REDS will host league-leading Moncton in their final home game of the regular season. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00pm.
Acadia visits Dal. That game is also scheduled for a 7:00pm start.
