(FREDERICTON, NB) The McGill Redbirds scored twice in the third period to beat the UNB REDS 2-1 Saturday afternoon in the 2026 Peterbilt Atlantic Pete Kelly Cup.
After a scoreless first period, the home team opened the scoring 3:37 into the second.
Stuart Rolofs broke in and fired a wrist shot that beat McGill goalie Nicolas Ruccia glove side.
Mid-way through the second, the REDS made a goaltending change with Liam Sztuska taking over for starter Remi Delafontaine. Delafontaine made eight saves on eight shots in just over 30 minutes of play.
McGill tied the U SPORTS exhibition game at the 6:08 mark of the third period when Mathieu Gagnon took a feed from behind the goal line and beat Sztuska from in close.
The visitors went ahead less than three minutes later when Igor Mburanumwe's shot from the blue line beat a screened Sztuska.
Despite a late push, the REDS were unable to find a tying goal.
Forward Camaryn Baber, who set up Rolofs' goal, was named the REDS' Tim Horton's Player of the Game while Ruccia, who made 30 saves on 31 shots, earned the honour for McGill.
UNB outshot the Redbirds 31-16.
The REDS return to Atlantic University Sport regular season play on Friday when they host the UPEI Panthers. Game time is 7:00pm.
The Redbirds visit Moncton on Sunday before returning home to resume their Ontario University Athletics 2025-2026 schedule.
