REDS Score Win Over Bold
(FREDERICTON, NB) Emmett Sproule (Collingwood, ON) scored twice to help the UNB REDS defeat the TMU Bold in game one of the Peterbilt Atlantic Pete Kelly Cup at Fredericton's Willie O'Ree Place on Friday night.
A five-goal second period broke open a tie game as the REDS scored a 7-3 win over the Bold.
"I thought we played a great game tonight," said Sproule. "We came out flying to start and I don't think they could match our speed and resiliency down low and our energy throughout the game."
Newcomer Sam McGinley (Calgary, AB) opened the scoring for the REDS with a highlight reel goal at 13:23 of the first period. McGinley took a pass from another first-year RED, Patrick Kyte (Pembroke, ON), on the rush, scoring while falling to his knees to give UNB the 1-0 lead.
"The first goal from Sam helped us out a lot," said Sproule. "That gave us the energy and flow we needed to take control of the game from there."
The second period opened with a flurry of scoring, seeing both teams combine for seven goals in the frame.
The Bold kicked things off with a powerplay goal from Kevin Gursoy (LaSalle, ON) just 1:38 into the period to tie the game.
UNB responded with four unanswered goals from Michael Petizian (Mississauga, ON), Sproule, Sean McGurn (Ottawa, ON), and Jason Willms (Kitchener, ON) to jump out to a 5-1 lead.
Cole Resnick (Thornhill, ON) helped TMU chip away at the UNB lead adding a goal at 14:30 of the period to make it 5-2 UNB.
But Sproule answered back two minutes later, adding his second of the night to put the UNB lead back to four and capping a wild second period.
The teams traded goals in the third, with Brady Gilmour (Grafton, ON) getting a goal for UNB and Ryan Wells (Mississauga, ON) scoring on the powerplay for the Bold.
"There's a lot of positives to take away from this game," said UNB head coach Gardiner MacDougall. "It was the first time over to the north side in a little while and it was nice to have a decent turnout. It's early on in the season and there's a lot we have to work on but overall, this was another step up from where we were last weekend, and obviously, we'll have to take another step up tomorrow."
The teams are back in action on Saturday night at UNB's Aitken Centre to play the second and final game of the Pete Kelly Cup. Puckdrop is at 6:00pm.
