Gatenby Named In Top 8
(FREDERICTON, NB) Joe Gatenby, of the REDS men’s hockey team, has been named a 2020-21 U SPORTS Top 8 Academic All-Canadian.
Gatenby, recently named a 2021-22 Atlantic University Sport 2nd Team All Star and the league’s Most Sportsmanlike Player, joins seven other student-athletes from across the country in this select group. All eight are being recognized for their excellence on and off the field of play.
Gatenby is the ninth UNB student-athlete named to the Top 8, the first since Adrian Robertson, in 2013-14.
The Top 8 is one male and one female student-athlete from each of the country’s four university athletic conferences.
“Joe has the ultimate high-performance mind-set,” said REDS head coach Gardiner MacDougall. “He’s one of our senior captains, and leads with his consistently high level of play and work ethic on the ice. In the classroom, he’ll graduate with a perfect 4.3 grade point average. In the community, he’s made a difference in the lives of many people with his volunteering for a number of different organizations, and the many school visits he’s made. He’s an all-star on the ice, in school, and in our community.”
Gatenby is a fourth-year student in UNB’s Faculty of Management. He’s pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, with honours in Finance.
Sporting a cumulative 4.3 GPA, Gatenby is a three-time Academic All-Canadian and on track to achieve that status for a fourth straight school year.
On top of his heavy commitment to being a student-athlete, Gatenby is an avid volunteer, giving countless hours to community organizations in Fredericton and his hometown of Kelowna, British Columbia.
“Joe is a multi-dimensional student-athlete who possesses the strength and ability to perform at high levels in the classroom, on the ice, and in the community,” said John Richard, UNB’s Director of Athletics. “On the ice, he's a reliable and gifted defender who handles high pressure situations on a regular basis, and does so with relative ease. In the classroom, as evidenced by his extraordinary GPA and achieving Academic All-Canadian status in all three years thus far, he excels in a way few student-athletes can. All the while, Joe finds time to give of himself and represent our men's hockey program and REDS family with grace and class in the community.”
