Masters Leads Reds In Win

(ST. JOHN'S, NL) The UNB Reds earned a split in their weekend series with the Memorial Sea-Hawks, scoring a 107-101 win, in overtime, in St. John's on Sunday.

The Reds came out firing, with revenge on their mind after a Saturday night loss.

Ibrahima Doumbouya (Calgary, AB) led the way for UNB early, scoring eight points in the first quarter on perfect 3-for-3 shooting from the field. Doumbouya's strong play helped spark the vistors and earn them a 30-21 lead after one quarter of play.

In the second quarter, UNB once again controlled the game, behind some hot shooting from Chris Spurrell (Quispamsis, NB). He was 5-for-6 in the quarter from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from the three-point line.

The Reds led 57-46 at the half.

Memorial battled back after the break and held UNB to a 10 point quarter while putting 21 on the board, evening the score 67-67 after 30 minutes.

It was a great fourth quarter, with six lead changes in the first six minutes.

Memorial jumped out to an 85-79 lead with less than three minutes to play, but first-year Red Marcus Masters (Kitchener, ON) made some clutch baskets down the stretch including a three-pointer with 1:44 left to tie the game.

Through 40 minutes, the Reds and Sea-Hawks were tied 87-87.

Masters' strong play continued in the extra frame. He scored 12 points to give him 28 on the day. Masters also grabbed four rebounds and dished out a pair of assists. He was named Subway Player of the Game for his efforts.

Spurrell was a big contributor for UNB, finishing with 23 points, while Matur Maluach (Sydney, Australia) had a double-double, securing 11 rebounds and adding 11 points. 

Memorial was led by Nathan Barker (Corner Brook, NL) who dropped 25 points and pulled down 11 boards.

Memorial will travel to Sydney next weekend for a series with Cape Breton.

The Reds host Acadia in UNB's home opener, on Friday. Game time is 8:00pm, at the Richard J. Currie Center.
