REDS Fall Short At ACBA Championship
(HALIFAX, NS) The UNB REDS fell short at the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association championship tournament on the weekend.
In their opening game, on Friday, the REDS fell 7-5 to the host Dalhousie Tigers in a game that was scoreless through four innings.
The Tigers scored three runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth.
Despite a rally of their own, UNB could not complete the comeback.
In game two, the REDS jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on the STFX X-Men, powered by a three-run homer by Iain Warr.
The X-Men countered, eventually tying the game 7-7 and forcing extra innings.
The REDS prevailed 11-10 with Nick St. Pierre driving in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
Starter Adam Wenzel threw five innings of one-hit ball for UNB and Ryan Galbraith led the REDS with three hits.
Their third game, on Saturday, was a win or go home game against Acadia and a re-match of the 2023 ABCA final.
The Axemen quickly built a 6-1 lead, but the REDS mounted a scrappy comeback, putting runners on in every inning.
In the end, the REDS could not capitalize on many of their opportunities, falling 6-4 and bringing their ACBA season to an end.
Off the field, St. Pierre was named the league’s Most Valuable Player. The senior third baseman was also named an ABCA all-star and the league’s top hitter.
While their ACBA season is over, the REDS will participate in the national university championship tournament, in Guelph, Ontario. That beings Thursday.
