REDS Celebrate 148 U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians

(FREDERICTON, NB) 148 UNB REDS student-athletes have been recognized as U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians for the 2024-2025 academic year.

The 148 come from 277 UNB student-athletes who consumed U SPORTS eligibility during the 2024-25 season, or 53.4%.

“This group deserves to be congratulated,” said REDS’ Athletic Director Jeff Speedy. “These young women and men work extremely hard on both the academic and athletic sides of what they do here. As has been said before, being a student-athlete isn’t easy, but being one who achieves Academic All-Canadian status is a tremendous accomplishment.”

To qualify as a U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian, a student-athlete must maintain an average of 80% or better while participating in a U SPORTS level sport.

“The group has shown great commitment,” added Speedy. “Academic All-Canadian status is a small reward for their dedication and hard work.”

Included in the 148 are 26 members of the REDS 2024-2025 women’s track and field team, a dozen members of the Atlantic University Sport champion men’s hockey team, 16 members of the REDS’ women’s hockey team, and ten members of the women’s volleyball team.

“We ask our student-athletes for a lot, and this is proof that they give us a lot,” said Speedy. “Balancing the complex demands of high-performance sport, academics, and everything else life throws at these kids is tough. That so many can excel is a testament to their character and desire to succeed.”

UNB’s Academic All-Canadian class of 2024-2025 was celebrated in a special ceremony on Tuesday morning, presided over by UNB’s President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Paul Mazerolle.
