(FREDERICTON, NB) The Carleton Ravens held the host UNB Reds to just 10 second half points on route to a 62-38 win in the championship game of UNB's Helen Campbell Memorial Tournament.
The Ravens finish the pre-season tournament with a 3-0 record, while the Reds finish the weekend 2-1.
Alyssa Cerino (Stoney Creek, ON) scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Ravens.
Cynthia Dupont (Coaticook, QC) added 13 points.
Jane Boyle (Halifax, NS) led the Reds with nine points, while Ja'Yon Leak (Charlotte, NC) added six.
"Carleton is not the team they were last year when they won a national championship, but they're still a very good basketball team and that kind of showed where the bar is," said Reds head coach Jeff Speedy.
Leak and teammate Eva Tumwine (Fredericton, NB) were named to the tournament all star team, along with the Ravens' Emma Kiesekamp (Merrickville, ON).
Cerino was named the tournament's MVP.
In the tournament's third place game, the Saint Mary's Huskies beat the Waterloo Warriors 68-53.
Huskies guard Alaina McMillan (Brantford, ON) and Kaitlyn Overeem (Brantford, ON) were also named tournament all stars.
Despite Sunday's finish, Speedy sees reason for optimism as the exhibition season continues.
"I think there's a lot of positives, for sure," said Speedy. "A lot of individuals did some really good things, so there's definitely some things we can build on and indivduals we can work with, but there's some very glaring weaknesses. Our ability to shoot the basketball, our ability to defend the ball, and then our half court team offence needs a lot of work, but a couple of those are pre-season issues that we'll work at and get better at."
Next on the Reds exhibition schedule is a three-game series with the York Lions.
The two teams will meet on Friday, October 12th, at Kennebecasis Valley High School. Game time is 7:00pm.
On Saturday, October 13th, the Reds and Lions tangle again, this time at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center. Tip off is at 5:00pm.
The teams will wrap up their pre-season series on Sunday, October 14th, in a 1:00pm tip off at Sussex Regional High School.
